I constantly see myself draw on what I learned at Pearson
Lily Hua Fang came to Pearson College from China in 1992 as the first winner of Pearson’s McConnell Scholarship sponsored by Drs. Fleming and Aileen McConnell, long term supporters of China’s connection with the rest of the world.
Hua arrived in Pearson nearly two months late, thanks to the fact that at that time, China had few cases of high-school students studying abroad, and getting all the paper work - passport, visa etc - proved difficult. After Pearson she studied Management Systems at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B. C. on a Gordon Shrum scholarship. She then went on to the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where she obtained an MA and PhD in finance.
In 2003 Hua joined INSEAD, a leading global business school with campuses in Fontainebleau (France) and Singapore, where she is currently an Assistant Professor of Finance. She conducts research on investment banking, private equity, and the performance of Wall Street analysts and fund managers. Her work has appeared in top-tier academic journals and in the popular press. She frequently presents at international finance conferences. She teaches corporate finance, capital markets, valuation, and private equity finance in both the MBA and Executive classrooms and has won awards for excellent teaching in the MBA program. One of her papers co-authored with Joel Peress won the 2009 Smith Breeden Distinguished Paper award, a prestigious prize given by the Journal of Finance to the top papers published in that journal.
Hua is married and has one daughter. She makes her home in Singapore but travels extensively in her work.
Of her time spent and memories of Pearson College Lily says her time at Pearson “greatly shaped my view of life, of the world and of other people. At times when I reflect on my life, I constantly see myself draw on what I learned at Pearson."
